The Offenders
Spam accounts, bots, and trolls are affecting the social media landscape every day. We encourage you to always take the high road to keep your social media experience positive. First let’s review the different types of problem accounts:
Spam accounts are fake impersonation accounts, sometimes of celebrities or large creators, anyone can fall prey to this.
Bots are robot accounts that are usually used for engagement farming and scamming.
Trolls are people with a negative vibe who leave mean comments on videos.
How to Identify
If you get a weird follow request or strange comment, the first thing you should do is check out the profile. If they are following a large number of people, but have no followers in return that could be suspicious. If they have a profile photo of another creator, like many muthership impersonator accounts, check back to the original creator to make sure. Look closely at the spelling of the username as there could be a slight different of one character that is hardly noticeable.
Reporting these can be challenging but you can click the arrow on the profile go through the options. In order to report impersonation, you have to be the original account owner so it’s not worth spending time on that.
Monitor Your Followers
If you have the ability, try to monitor who follows you. We know this can be hard if you get a lot of followers daily, or have a viral moment where you get a mass influx of followers in a short amount of time, but it’s worth keeping an eye on it.
If you notice a suspicious looking account follows you, you can remove them without them ever getting notified! This will help keep your followers list authentic and in the long run will provide you with better engagement on your content. This is also why we suggest never buying followers or engaging in follow for a follow trains. We know how hard it is to get followers, so it might seem counterintuitive to remove a follower, it will be worth it in the long run to make sure your page is truly successful.
Don’t engage with negative energy on social media. There is no shame in using that block button or even removing a user from following you. Put your mental health first and keep your social media a positive space.
Search for Imposters
If you have a large following, it’s good practice to do a search on variations of your username to see if any imposter accounts have sprouted up. This will help you stay on top of spammers who might try and scam your loyal followers!
