How to Add a Voiceover to Your Instagram Reels

Using Instagram Reels voiceovers gives your videos a cinematic feel and opens up the ability to add creativity, levity, or suspense to your videos.

You can narrate your videos (as I’ve done in the tutorial below), verbalize your interior monologue, pretend to be someone offscreen, or do something entirely different.

Here is a quick tutorial on how to do a voice in Instagram Reels (with further descriptions below the video).

A piece of advice before you get started to save you a lot of headaches and time: record your voice-over in segments, in case you want to change any one part. That way you only have to change the section you want.

Step-by-step instructions

If you want music for your video, first select the track you will use.

Then record your video as you would normally.

Once you’ve recorded the video, click add and select the music icon again.

You’ll see voiceover as an option at the bottom. Click that and you’ll see a time bar show up and the beginning of your video.

Hold the record button and start speaking your voiceover. Every time there is a natural break, you should stop speaking and take your finger off the record button, so you create a segment (this way you won’t need to re-record the entire voiceover if you change your mind about one part). Keep recording segments of the voiceover until you reach the end of the video.

Once you’ve finished the voiceover, you can then change the volume of the music and the voiceover, so you have the optimal mix of the two (e.g., if the music volume is at 100%, you will not be able to hear the voiceover).

That’s it! Let us know if you have any questions in the comments.
