8 Tips for Sharing Your Art On Instagram

If you are anything like us, you have always had that drive to be creative and make art, but you might not know how to start. The great thing about Instagram is that you can easily start sharing your work and amass a loyal following if you follow a few tried and true methods.

1. Make Your Account a Work of Art

This one starts with the overall look and feel of your feed. Take a step back and think about how you want your account to look to the outside viewer. Before someone follows your account, they will most likely stumble upon your page and check out what you are doing without knowing you. Having a cohesive and united vision for your Instagram page will show them that you mean business.

2. Post With a Purpose

The easiest way to have an incredible Instagram page, that shares your work with a wide audience is to have a clear vision. If your page is showcasing work that you are passionate about, that energy will shine through to your audience.

3. Add a Bio With Some Flair

Your profile is the first thing someone new to your page will see. This is a great place to add a website if you have it, your location, and any description that you would like to add. You can really let your personality shine through here, with clever use of emojis, or even linking to other Instagram accounts that you have. You’ll need to stay under a 150 character limit, so make these words count!

4. Share a Post Every Day or Two

One of the absolute best ways to gain and retain followers is to post something every single day. This can be asking a lot especially if your art takes a long time to complete, so perhaps you can share a “Work in Progress Wednesday” post or “Throwback Thursday” post. Having a regular theme in which you use every week will allow you to plan out your posts ahead of time. If you can’t post every single day, try 4 or 5 days instead. But most importantly, make it consistent, and post on the same days every week.

5. Focus on Pleasant Lighting

The difference between a post that gets a lot of interaction from your followers and one that is just swiped away, is the light. Try to use natural light as much as possible and avoid any unflattering shadows. Lighting setups can certainly help your shot, but make sure the settings aren’t too harsh. Warm or cool light which is inviting can help your followers take in your artwork.

6. Hashtag Effectively

An effective way to get people who don’t follow you to see your artwork is to hashtag effectively. Using ‘#’ with a certain specific word/term directly after without putting any spaces, will allow anyone to search that term on Instagram. If done well, users from around the world will be able to find your artwork and start following you.

7. Respond to direct messages and comments

A fantastic way to interact with your followers is to like and respond to any comments left on your posts. This will show that you are a real person who appreciates their input rather than a faceless account. Additionally, regularly checking your direct messages (the icon in the top right corner while in the home section) to poignantly and thoughtfully respond to people who have reached out to you. This is a fast way to build relationships with people through Instagram, and these networking opportunities will allow you to grow your art business.

8. Start Snapping

There is no time like the present, so start taking photos of your artwork and put yourself out there! You may make some mistakes along the way, or it might be difficult to start, but this is all part of learning something new. Be open to letting Instagram take you in a new direction with sharing your artwork, and you just might like what it can do for you!
