5 Ways to Share your Knowledge on Social Media
We all have a wealth of knowledge through lived and learned experiences. And a great way to enjoy and feel content as we move to each new chapter is to give back. Through social media, you are able to act as a mentor to anyone in the world with ease. 71% of Fortune 500 companies have mentoring programs, and of those with a mentor, 97% say they are valuable. Yet only 37% of professionals have a mentor (source). The need for mentors is clear, and you can easily connect with people through social media to share your expertise. We’ve shared our tips below for how to put your knowledge into the world through social media.
1. Start a hobby/skill specific group or account
Many of us have hobbies and interests that we have nurtured our entire lives, yet we have not been able to devote our careers to them. In later life, we have the time and expertise to fully explore our hobbies, but we might not know where to start. Through social media, there is a community for practically any niche imaginable. So consider starting a Facebook group that is devoted to your hobby. Depending on what it is, there may be a lot of groups like it, so a good way to stand out from the crowd is to create an Instagram account that is devoted to a single hobby.
With the clever and precise use of hashtags, you will be able to reach any account in the world, and your following can grow quickly. Instagram is an especially good option for those who have interests that are visual by nature. You are able to post still images and videos, so it is beneficial to have solid visual sensibilities while on these platforms. There is also a shop feature on Instagram that will allow you to sell anything you want to your followers. This would be a great alternative revenue stream for those who want to stay active in retirement.
2. Write LinkedIn or Medium posts
Maybe your area of expertise is less visual and could benefit from long and detailed posts. In that case, use LinkedIn or Medium to get your writing off the ground. LinkedIn is the top networking and professional development platform. Many people use it to network and gain employment, but the use of posting and reposting articles is important for spreading information. Medium is also a great website to reach younger audiences. So, if you are interested in acting as a mentor, consider joining Medium and writing around a specific theme such as design, self-help, or relationship building. Not sure where to get started? 3. Start a weekly clubhouse conversation
Clubhouse is a social audio app where people can communicate in audio chat rooms. You can have a set group of people who are able to talk, and those listening in can request to say something, so you have control of the room. Initially an invite-only platform, Clubhouse is now open to all who want to join. There are conversations on a wide range of topics, and in July 2021, it was announced that TED will have exclusive talks on the platform. There really is something for everyone on this platform, and if you aren’t comfortable in hosting one just yet, then consider joining and listening to some conversations to get an idea of how it works.
4. YouTube Content
If you are comfortable in front of a camera or think you may be with a little encouragement, then you should start filming Youtube videos. There are many different types of videos that you can create, such as a vlog (video blog of day-to-day activities), tutorials, product reviews, reaction videos, and cooking videos, among many others. No matter what you choose to make videos about, and how you choose to make them, there will be an audience for it. It’s okay if you aren’t great at it at first, the best way to improve your video skills is to just try it out. You can even search for videos on YouTube on how to make stellar videos for YouTube! TikTok
TikTok is a video-focused social media platform that hosts a variety of short-form user videos with durations from 15 seconds to three minutes. When you explore TikTok, you realize that it’s not only about dancing to music, many companies and organizations are on the platform, and you often have the same kinds of videos that are on YouTube, but just in shorter durations. You also make videos on TikTok with your phone, which allows you a bit more grace when it comes to perfecting your technique.
